Varnis1h To A Great Finish!
Back

J.W. etc. makes three types of non-toxic
water based varnish:
  1. Varnish is best applied using a wide soft bristle brush used only for varnishing.
  2. Pour the varnish into a dish or container so no dust or particles will be transferred back into the bottle. Dip the brush into the varnish and apply in one direction. Flow it on smoothly. Do not criss-cross or go back and forth.
  3. The self leveling additive will smooth everything out. Slightly overlap the previous stroke. If you have missed a spot, do not try to "patch" it up. You can fix it on the next coat.
  4. Having enough varnish on your brush and brushing it on once and leaving it are the secrets to success.
  5. Apply 2 coats, letting the first coat dry, approximately 20 minutes, depending on weather conditions. If you try to varnish over a wet surface, you will get clouding or hazing.
  6. To get the smoothest surface possible, you can wet sand between coats. After 2 coats of varnish, take very fine (600 grit or finer) sand paper, dip it in a dish of 1 cup of water that has had 1 drop of dishwashing detergent added to it (Joy, Palmolive) and lightly buff the varnish. Wipe and let the piece dry.
  7. You may apply several more coats, if desired, wet sanding after each 2 coats. End with the varnish. Wet sanding may make the varnish look milky, but after it dries it will become clear.
  8. You may want to apply JW etc. Painters Wax. Use a white 3M pad to put it on and wipe it off with a soft cloth for a beautiful finish. This also smoothes the surface of any brush strokes or imperfections. When the wax dries, it is hard and will not show fingerprints.
